Zimbabwe: A Rising Air Travel Destination

Zimbabwe is experiencing a surge in air travel, with a notable 12 percent increase in the number of passengers passing through its airports by the end of last year. The country’s commitment to expanding and modernising its airports is paying off, as evidenced by over 580,000 passengers recorded in the third quarter of last year, up from 522,000.

The growth in air travel not only signifies a rebound in confidence in the government’s initiatives but also presents exciting opportunities for the tourism sector. Anticipated rise in foreign visitors this year is expected to further boost the country’s tourism industry.

According to Joseph Sibanda, the office manager at Villa Gianni Boutique Hotel, the increase in passenger volumes not only reflects the success of airport modernisation efforts but also has positive implications for the hotel sector and tourism value chains. The focus now shifts towards leveraging this momentum to enhance business prospects and capitalise on the positive impact of airport modernisation on tourism-related businesses.

While ZIMSTAT data shows a slight decline in international flights during the fourth quarter, there is a collective call for both government and the private sector to collaborate in promoting Zimbabwe as a safe and attractive destination for investment and tourism. Dr. Tinashe Muzamhindo, CEO of the Zimbabwe Institute of Strategic Thinking, emphasises the importance of continuous policy review to boost confidence in the airline sector and attract more visitors to the country.

With a roadmap for airport modernisation aligned with global standards, Zimbabwe ispoised to achieve its goal of becoming an upper middle-income society by 2030. The potential for growth and development in the tourism sector is evident, highlighting the need for collaborative efforts to enhance trade and investment promotion strategies.

As Zimbabwe continues to make strides in enhancing its aviation infrastructure and attracting more visitors, it solidifies its position as a rising air travel destination with promising opportunities for both business and leisure travellers.
