ZIMBABWE A KEY STOP ON ROVOS RAIL’S EPIC SOUTHERN AFRICA TRAIN

By Martin Chemhere

Zimbabwe is firmly on the map for high-end tourism as it continues to be a key destination in the prestigious Rovos Rail’s Great Southern Africa train adventures. Since its inception in 1989, Rovos Rail has cultivated a global reputation for delivering unparalleled travel experiences, seamlessly blending the captivating landscapes of Africa with the elegance and thrill reminiscent of the golden age of leisure travel.

Offering journeys ranging from a concise 48 hours to an immersive 15 nights, Rovos Rail meticulously crafts bespoke train safaris that connect some of the continent’s most iconic destinations. These meticulously planned itineraries are punctuated by a variety of enriching off-train excursions, allowing passengers to delve deeper into the cultural and natural wonders of each location.

The trains themselves are a testament to exquisite craftsmanship. Rebuilt with rich wood panelling, these luxurious mobile havens can be hauled by either diesel or electric locomotives. Each train accommodates a maximum of 72 guests in 36 sumptuously appointed suites, ensuring an intimate and exclusive travel experience.

Beyond scheduled journeys, the trains are also available for private charter, while the versatile Events Train can cater to up to 250 guests for daytime excursions. Recognizing the diverse travel aspirations of their clientele, Rovos Rail offers the flexibility to combine shorter and longer journeys, often with attractive discounts, and presents curated specials and collections that integrate their train travel with other engaging experiences.

For those specifically venturing into Zimbabwe, Rovos Rail offers two distinct itineraries that showcase the country’s unique allure. The shorter, three or four-night journey, covering approximately 1400 kilometres, commences in Pretoria, South Africa, and meanders northwards.

The route passes through historically significant towns like Warmbaths (Bela-Bela), renowned for its mineral springs, and Nylstroom (Modimolle), once thought by early settlers to be the source of the Nile. Travellers cross the Tropic of Capricorn and the Limpopo River before arriving in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city, the capital of Matabeleland, and a significant industrial hub.

Passengers on the four-night journey are treated to an enriching visit to Matobo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its ancient bushmen cave paintings, dramatic granite formations, and its spiritual significance. Notably, it is also the final resting place of Cecil John Rhodes, whose grave sits atop the Malindidzimu – the ‘hill of benevolent spirits’ – offering breathtaking panoramic views. The journey continues along one of the world’s longest straight stretches of railway line, stretching an impressive 114 kilometres, before traversing the diverse wildlife sanctuary of Hwange National Park, where a memorable game drive excursion awaits.

The adventure culminates at the majestic Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River, offering travellers a plethora of recreational activities in the surrounding area, including scenic cruises, exhilarating whitewater rafting, and exceptional opportunities for game viewing and photographic safaris. This route is also available in reverse, and depending on railway capacity, may occasionally be routed through Botswana.

For a more extensive exploration, the 11-night, 2500-kilometer journey offers a deeper dive into the region, including significant time spent in Zimbabwe. This grand adventure traverses the dramatic Drakensberg Mountains, links with the scenic Panorama Route and game viewing in Kruger National Park, and includes cultural experiences in Maputo (Mozambique) and the Kingdom of eSwatini.

A highlight of this longer itinerary is the exploration of Zimbabwe, featuring a visit to the iconic Great Zimbabwe Monument, a tour of Antelope Park, and an immersion into the natural and cultural heritage of Matobo National Park. The journey continues to Hwange National Park for further wildlife encounters before culminating in Victoria Falls, where guests enjoy a guided walking tour of the village and the awe-inspiring falls, followed by a picturesque sunset cruise on the Zambezi River.

Zimbabwe’s inclusion in these prestigious Rovos Rail itineraries underscores its appeal as a premier tourist destination, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and breathtaking natural beauty. The partnership with Rovos Rail not only elevates Zimbabwe’s tourism profile but also provides discerning travellers with an unforgettable and luxurious way to experience the heart of Southern Africa.
