WOMEN IN TOURISM REGIONAL CONGRESS UNDERWAY IN SIERRA LEONE
The Women in Tourism Regional Congress, currently underway in Freetown, Sierra Leone, from 29-31 October 2024, is a pivotal event aimed at empowering women in the tourism sector. This crucial initiative, held in collaboration with UN Tourism, is focused on addressing the significant challenges faced by women in the industry and fostering their advancement through education, innovation, and financial access. Barbara Rwodzi, the Zimbabwean Minister of Tourism is attending the event, along with other peers from around the continent.
Women have long been a vital force in the tourism sector across the African continent, contributing significantly to its growth and development. However, despite their immense potential, they often encounter numerous obstacles that hinder their progress. These challenges include gender-based discrimination, limited access to education and training, unequal pay, and lack of opportunities for leadership and decision-making roles.
The Women in Tourism Regional Congress seeks to tackle these issues head-on by providing a platform for women to network, share experiences, and learn from industry experts. Through a series of workshops, panel discussions, and keynote speeches, participants will explore innovative strategies to overcome these challenges and advance their careers.
One of the key focus areas of the congress is education and training. By investing in women’s education, the tourism industry can equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their roles. This includes providing opportunities for women to acquire certifications in hospitality management, tour guiding, and other relevant fields.
Another critical aspect is fostering innovation. Women bring unique perspectives and ideas to the tourism industry, and by encouraging their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, we can drive innovation and sustainable development. The congress will explore ways to support women-led businesses and social enterprises in the tourism sector, providing them with the resources and mentorship they need to succeed.
Finally, access to finance is a major barrier for women entrepreneurs in the tourism industry. The congress will address this issue by exploring innovative financing solutions and connecting women with potential investors and lenders. The provision of access to capital for women enables them to scale their businesses, create jobs, and contribute to the economic growth of their communities.
The Women in Tourism Regional Congress is a crucial step towards empowering women in the tourism sector. Addressing the challenges they face and providing them with the tools and resources they need to succeed, women can unlock their full potential and create a more inclusive and equitable tourism industry.
