UPGRADES AT HWANGE NATIONAL PARK BOOST CONSERVATION TOURISM
As a testament to its unwavering commitment to eco-tourism and sustainable travel, Zimbabwe has taken a significant step in conservation tourism by enhancing key facilities at Hwange National Park. These vital upgrades, part of the country’s broader efforts under the Nature and Wildlife Cluster, reaffirm Zimbabwe’s dedication to preserving its natural heritage while enriching visitor experiences.
The Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon. Barbara Rwodzi, recently undertook a comprehensive tour of the upgraded infrastructure in Hwange, accompanied by her counterpart, the Minister of Environment, Climate and Wildlife. The tour highlighted the extensive work carried out at the Main Camp Operations Centre and a selection of refurbished lodges, all made possible through the invaluable support of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).
These recent developments underscore the ongoing, robust collaboration between the Zimbabwean government and crucial conservation partners like IFAW. The partnership aims to strengthen tourism infrastructure, improve operational efficiency, and, ultimately, enhance the overall visitor experience in Hwange National Park, one of Zimbabwe’s premier wildlife destinations.
The enhancements at Hwange are a direct result of a long-term commitment. IFAW and the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) solidified their partnership in 2023 with a landmark 25-year agreement, committing an estimated US$50 million to conservation efforts in Hwange. This substantial investment goes beyond infrastructure, also focusing on strengthening law enforcement, improving ranger welfare, and promoting human-wildlife coexistence through initiatives such as predator-proof bomas in adjacent communities.
The upgrades are expected to not only attract more tourists but also to foster a deeper appreciation for Zimbabwe’s diverse wildlife and breathtaking landscapes. By providing world-class facilities and ensuring the sustainability of its natural resources, Zimbabwe is positioning itself as a leading destination for responsible and enriching wildlife tourism. This milestone signifies a bright future for Hwange National Park, where conservation and tourism can thrive hand-in-hand.
