TOURISM OPERATORS COLLABORATE TO ATTRACT VISITORS
Despite a perceived lack of widespread publicity, Kariba’s tourism operators are actively promoting the region’s unique offerings, exemplified by a recent initiative spearheaded by Zambezi Cruise & Safaris.
In May 2024, the hospitality group, known for its land and lake experiences, hosted an exclusive familiarization trip for international travel agents and tour operators, immediately following Africa’s Travel Indaba.
This meticulously planned journey, spanning four days from May 19th to 22nd, aimed to provide a firsthand experience of Kariba’s allure. It also showcased the newly refurbished Zambezi Trader, alongside the company’s diverse fleet of cruise boats, lodges, and safari camps.
Participants were immersed in the local culture and natural beauty, beginning with tours of Kariba Safari Lodge and Crowned Eagle Boutique Hotel, followed by a comprehensive exploration of Kariba Town. This included visits to iconic landmarks such as the Kariba Dam wall, the Church of Santa Barbara, and the scenic Kariba Viewpoint.
A highlight of the trip was a two-night cruise aboard the Zambezi Trader, traversing the vast expanse of Lake Kariba. The itinerary was packed with engaging activities, including sundowner cruises, beach braai dinners, and exploration of Matusadona National Park in collaboration with the National Parks Foundation.
Tender boat excursions allowed for fishing and game viewing, while specialist talks provided insights into the lake’s ecosystem and the history of the Tonga people.
Participants had the opportunity to witness the magic of Lake Kariba through a detailed itinerary, beginning with arrival and town tours, followed by a cruise to Matusadona National Park, where they explored the park by road and boat. The subsequent days were dedicated to cruising, game viewing, fishing, and educational talks, culminating in a return to Kariba.
The trip also offered an optional extension to Mana Pools National Park, providing a limited number of agents with a two-night site inspection of Mana Pools Safari Lodge.
The Kariba Familiarisation Trip underscored the region’s potential as a premier tourist destination, highlighting the collaborative efforts of local operators to attract international visitors.
