Refurbishment of RMIA Air Traffic Control Tower Underway

The refurbishment of the iconic and historically significant RG. Mugabe International Airport air traffic control tower is under way.
The tower’s unique design is reminiscent of the “Great Medieval Palace” the Great Zimbabwe Monument”, where the country derived its name.
The tower’s unique design, inspired by the majestic Great Zimbabwe Monument, is being carefully preserved. The refurbishment focuses on upgrading the internal infrastructure and technological systems, while maintaining the external character that has become synonymous with Zimbabwean aviation.

Key Upgrades:
Enhanced air traffic control technology:

New radar and communication systems will be installed to improve airspace management and flight safety. This will enable the tower to handle increased traffic and accommodate larger aircraft.

Modernized working environment:

The interior of the tower will be revamped to create a comfortable and efficient space for air traffic controllers. This includes ergonomic workstations, improved lighting, and better climate control.

Sustainability features:

The refurbishment will incorporate energy-saving measures and eco-friendly materials, reducing the tower’s environmental footprint. The refurbishment has seen widespread excitement among stakeholders across the board including hospitality operators, tour operators, and government officials, among other travel and tourism industry players. The project began in 2023 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. The refurbishment is part of a larger modernization program for the R.G. Mugabe International Airport, aimed at boosting its capacity and competitiveness.
