MAHENYE’S SHANGAAN COMMUNITY: WHERE CULTURE, WILDLIFE, AND RESPONSIBLE TOURISM MERGE

By Martin Chemhere

Gonarezhou National Park, a jewel of Zimbabwe’s natural heritage, is more than just a haven for wildlife; it’s Shangaan country. For centuries, the Shangaan people, also known as the MaChangana or XiTsonga, have called this land home, their history intertwined with the park’s rugged landscapes and abundant fauna. Their story, rooted in the great Mfecane migrations of the mid-19th century, resonates through the generations, connecting them to their brethren in southern Mozambique, South Africa, and Eswatini.

Within this rich cultural tapestry, a unique model of responsible tourism has emerged, thanks to the vision of internationally renowned Zimbabwean, Clive Stockil. Growing up amidst the Shangaan community, Stockil recognized the potential for synergy between local cultures, wildlife conservation, and tourism. Together with the people of Mahenye Village, he has fostered an environment where these three pillars support and enrich each other, creating a truly sustainable future.

The success of this model is evident in Mahenye Village itself. Thriving on the income generated by tourism, the community has built a school, clinic, police station, and mill, directly improving the lives of its members. This development demonstrates the tangible benefits of responsible tourism, where visitors contribute directly to the well-being of the local population.

A visit to Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge and Gonarezhou National Park is therefore an immersive experience that goes beyond the typical wildlife safari. It is an opportunity to connect with the Shangaan people, to delve into the wisdom of their traditions, and to witness firsthand the positive impact of sustainable development.

Visitors are invited to engage with Shangaan culture, to learn about their customs, beliefs, and artistic expressions. They can participate in cultural tours, visit traditional homesteads, and interact with community members, gaining a deeper understanding of their way of life. This cultural exchange enriches the visitor experience, providing a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of people and nature.

Moreover, the presence of tourism fosters a sense of pride and ownership within the Shangaan community. They become active participants in conservation, recognizing the value of protecting the wildlife and natural resources that attract visitors from around the world. This sense of stewardship ensures the long-term sustainability of both the park and the community.

The Mahenye model exemplifies the potential of responsible tourism to uplift communities while preserving their cultural heritage and protecting the environment. It is a testament to the power of collaboration, where the interests of people and nature are aligned, creating a harmonious and sustainable future for all. As visitors explore the wonders of Gonarezhou, they become part of this inspiring story, contributing to the continued success of a community-driven conservation initiative that is transforming lives and preserving a precious natural heritage.
