GALLERY IBASA: MASTERS OF MEDIUM SIZED SCULPTURES

In the heart of the town of Mashava, a vibrant artistic scene is thriving. Gallery Ibasa, founded in 1995 by a trio of visionary artists, has been quietly nurturing talent and showcasing stunning works of art.

The gallery’s mission is to promote local talent, create generational wealth, and train aspiring artists. By focusing on medium-sized sculptures, they have successfully captured the attention of art enthusiasts at prestigious events like the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Travel Expo.

“Our goal is to elevate local sculptors to international standards,” says Goodhope Madzura, one of the co-directors. “We also strive to empower individuals with artistic potential, regardless of their background.”
Gallery Ibasa represents a diverse range of artistic mediums, including oil paintings, drawings, wooden sculptures, and mixed media. They showcase both local and international artists, organizing seven local exhibitions annually.

Their clientele includes a mix of local and international buyers, such as mining companies, lodges, hotels, and tourists. The gallery’s commitment to addressing current issues is reflected in their choice of exhibition themes.

To further their impact, Gallery Ibasa is implementing an inclusive program that will teach life skills and sculpting techniques to individuals with disabilities, such as the deaf and dumb. Also on offer are educational programs for school leavers who are passionate about art.

By supporting local artists and attracting tourists, Gallery Ibasa contributes significantly to the local economy. However, the gallery faces several challenges, including transportation costs, machinery expenses, and limited space for their operations. To overcome these obstacles, they actively seek opportunities to participate in regional and international exhibitions through organizations like Zimtrade.

Despite the challenges, Gallery Ibasa remains dedicated to its mission of promoting art and culture in Mashava. Showcasing the exceptional talent of Zimbabwean artists helps to put the town on the global art map.

Gallery Ibasa is situated at stand number 80A, Mashaba Motors Complex, Balmain, Mashava.
