FIRST LADY IGNITES HERITAGE TOURISM THROUGH CULTURAL COMPETITIONS IN MATABELELAND SOUTH

The Patron of Tourism, Culture and Heritage Ambassador, the First Lady of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa, yesterday led the Zviperengo Cultural Quiz and Gastronomy School Competitions in Matabeleland South. The event powerfully demonstrated culture’s role as a cornerstone of tourism development.

The competitions, held at the Gwanda Showgrounds, transformed the venue into a vibrant cultural tourism hub and a feast for the senses. Learners from various communities prepared a diverse array of mouthwatering dishes, reflecting the rich culinary heritage of groups such as the Tshivenda, Kalanga, Xhosa, and Sesotho. The culinary showcase ranged from marula-infused dried meats to pumpkin sweetened with honey and an assortment of wild fruit delicacies, providing a tangible experience of Zimbabwe’s gastronomic diversity.

Dr. Mnangagwa’s initiative is deeply rooted in the “catch them young” philosophy, aiming to empower children to embrace their roots, take pride in their heritage, and become authentic ambassadors of their culture. By nurturing identity through language, cuisine, and tradition, the First Lady reaffirmed a fundamental principle: Zimbabwe’s true competitive edge in tourism lies in the authentic lived experiences and unique cultural expressions of its people.

This approach not only preserves invaluable traditions but also creates compelling, immersive attractions for visitors, ensuring that the country’s rich heritage becomes a sustainable driver of its tourism economy. The event underscored the importance of integrating cultural preservation with tourism development, fostering a deeper appreciation for indigenous traditions while simultaneously creating engaging experiences for both locals and international visitors.
