Experience the Best of Zimbabwe on a Boat Cruise

Zimbabwe is a land of stunning natural beauty, and its many water bodies offer visitors a chance to experience the country’s unique wildlife and landscapes from a different perspective. One of the best ways to explore these water bodies is by boat cruise.

Lake Kariba

Lake Kariba is the largest man-made lake in Africa and one of the most popular tourist destinations
in Zimbabwe. The lake is home to a variety of wildlife, including elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and lions.

A cruise on Lake Kariba offers visitors the opportunity to relax and immerse in the scenic beauty of this inland sea surrounded by majestic wildlife. Various companies such as Zambezi Cruise and Safaris, provide morning and evening wildlife cruises along the many inlets of the lake shoreline, followed by drinks and the iconic Kariba sunset. Fishing boats are also an option for the avid angler with additional options of
a guided game walk or drive in the Matusadona.

Victoria Falls

Sunset cruises on the Zambezi River are a great way to enjoy the beautiful scenery and wildlife, including hippos, crocodiles, and elephants. The cruises last about two hours and depart from launch sites on both the Zimbabwean and Zambian sides of the river.

Visitors to this popular tourism destination can explore the Zambezi in the lap of luxury on the signature cruises on offer from Shearwater Victoria Falls. The options include sunrise, lunch or sunset cruises on the Riversong, Sundancer or Dragon Fly. For those who want to make the excursion a group activity, the company runs private trips based on a minimum of 40 passengers.

Mana Pools National Park

The protected park’s remote location along the Zambezi River means that this boat transfer becomes a wildlife safari from the beginning. Tour operator Hideaways Africa says “There is no better introduction to Mana Pools National Park than a boat transfer from Chirundu to Camp Mana.”

Mana Pools National Park is home to one of the most diverse populations of wildlife in Africa and a boat transfer is the perfect way to experience it all. During the journey, you will see Nile crocodiles and hippopotamus in great numbers, as well as many of the 450 recorded bird species. The natural world welcomes you to Mana Pools National Park with several stops allowing you to take in what this wildlife wonderland presents.

Lake Chivero

Lake Chivero, a reservoir on the Manyame River in Zimbabwe, is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Formerly called Lake McIlwaine in memory of Sir Robert McIlwaine, a former judge of the
High Court and founder of Southern Rhodesia’s soil and water conservation movement, Lake Chivero is a thriving recreational park.

With five designated fishing and picnic sites, the park offers something for everyone. Recreational boating
is permitted on the lake, with many private boat hire companies available. Whether you’re looking to cast a line, explore the lake by boat, or simply enjoy a family picnic, Lake Chivero is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Zimbabwe.

Lake Mutirikwi

Coming after Lake Kariba and Tokwe Mukosi, Lake Mutirikwi is the third-largest man-made reservoir
in Zimbabwe, with a capacity of 1,425 megalitres Travel blogger Eminently Eve advises that “You cannot visit Masvingo (whether for business or pleasure) and not spare some moments to unwind at this mesmerising lake”.

Boat cruises on Lake Mutirikwi typically depart from the recreational park, located on the shores of the lake. Cruises are available in a variety of durations, from one hour to several hours and some trips also offer the opportunity to stop on one of the many islands in the lake for a picnic.
