Chizarira National Park in US$3 million to revamp

Chizarira National Park is undergoing a major facelift after Defend, formerly known as National Park Rescue, released US$3 million in the past six years to enhance wildlife conservation and infrastructure development.

The park is situated on the great Zambezi escarpment in the northwestern part of Zimbabwe, overlooking the Zambezi Valley and the upper waters of Lake Kariba.

Speaking during a media tour in Chizarira ahead of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Defend and Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) on Friday, Defend executive director Dr Niall McCann said the MoU will act as a vehicle to bring external foreign investment.

“We have been working in very close partnership with Zimparks now for six and a half years and tomorrow we are in the privileged position to sign a very long-term agreement to bring that partnership even closer under the banner of a new trust, the Chizarira Conservation Trust.

“We hope this will act as a vehicle to bring much more external foreign investment into this national park and allow us to take the conservation of Zimparks to the next level,” said Dr McCann.
