Celebrating 50 Years of the Zimbabwe Air Rally in Kariba

The skies above Kariba were alive with excitement as the 50th annual Zimbabwe Air Rally took off. Sixty aircraft of various makes and sizes, including 36 foreign-registered and 24 local planes, gathered at Kariba International Airport for the event’s first leg, marking the milestone anniversary of the rally’s inception in 1974.

The air show enthralled residents from nearby neighborhoods such as Nyamhunga, Mahombekombe, Heights, Baobab Ridge, and Mica Point, treating them to a breathtaking display of aerobatic maneuvers, including turns, climbs, slow rolls, and rudder rolls. The event not only provided a boost to Kariba’s tourism industry, with local hotels accommodating approximately 170 overnight visitors, but also offered a unique opportunity for locals to witness the impressive aerial showcase without the need for tickets or special permission.
