Interesting information about some key tourism destinations in Zimbabwe
Great Zimbabwe is a UNESCO World Heri-tage site. It is where the name of the country comes from. It is the largest ancient struc-ture in Africa south of the Sahara Desert. Great Zimbabwe was built between the 11th-15th centuries. The city was once the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe which was a powerful and wealthy trading empire. Great Zimbabwe served as a royal palace for the Zimbabwean monarch. Its advanced architecture features towering stone walls, intricate stonework and a complex drain-age system. The structure was built without mortar using a technique called “dry-stone-walling”.
The Victoria Falls are one of the seven world wonders and is also a UNESCO World Heri- tage Site. They are 1708 meters wide and can release up to 500 million litres of water per minute at four different heights: 61 meters for Devil’s Cataract, 83 meters for Main Falls, 99 meters for Rainbow Falls, and 98 meters for Eastern Cataract, are the largest wa-terfalls in the world. In the core zone, eight breathtaking volcanic gorges and numerous islands serve as breeding grounds for four migratory and endangered bird species, including the Taita Falcon and Black Eagle. The riverine “rainforest” inside the waterfall splash zone is reliant on the preservation of huge amounts of water from the Zambezi River and high humidity due to the spray plume, which reaches a maximum height of 500 meters and is visible from roadways in Bulawayo and Lusaka, respectively, 50 and 30 kilometres away.(UNESCO)
Hwange National Park is one of Africa’s largest and most diverse game reserves covering 14,650 square kilometres. The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife including the Big Five – the African elephant, the lion, the buffalo, the leopard rhinoceros. Other animals found in the park are zebras, giraffe, cheetah, hippopotamus, wildebeest, antelopes, monkeys etc. The park is also home to a diverse birdlife such as ostrich, eagles, vultures, pelicans storks and much more.
