
CAAZ NAMES GEORGE MASHABABE AS DIRECTOR GENERAL
The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) has announced the appointment of Mr. George Mashababe as its new substantive Director General, effective from April 1, 2025. The appointment, made by the CAAZ Board of Directors, was communicated to aviation industry stakeholders and business partners in a formal statement released on April 1, 2025.
Mr. Mashababe brings a wealth of experience to the Director General role, boasting an impressive career spanning over three decades within the aviation sector. An accomplished aviation expert, he commenced his career in the Air Force of Zimbabwe in 1988 and subsequently joined CAAZ in 2002 as an Airworthiness Inspector.
His dedication and expertise saw him rise through the ranks, holding positions such as Directorate of Flight Safety and Standards, Directorate of Air Accidents and Serious Incidents Investigation (DAAII), and most recently, Director of Transport and Infrastructural Development in 2020, a position he held until his current appointment.
Prior to his ascending to this top leadership role, Mr. Mashababe served as Zimbabwe’s ICAO Continuous Monitoring Coordinator (ANCMC) and Zimbabwe Regulations Development Committee (REDCOM) Member. His extensive involvement with international aviation bodies also includes representing Zimbabwe in the United Nations Aviation Specialized Agency and holding certifications as a certified international expert for the ICAO Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP) auditors and Coordinated Validation Mission Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) across various audit scopes. His expertise extends to numerous other areas within the aviation domain.
Mr. Mashababe holds a Master of Commerce in Business Administration from Great Zimbabwe University and a Bachelor of Business Leadership Degree from Calvary University, equipping him with a strong academic foundation to complement his practical experience.
The CAAZ Board, in its statement, expressed confidence in Mr. Mashababe’s ability to sustain a culture of continuous review of civil aviation policies and legislative frameworks, aligning them with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) prescribed Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs). The Board extended its congratulations to Mr. Mashababe and conveyed its full support as he assumes his new responsibilities.
The appointment of Mr. Mashababe is anticipated to bring stability and experienced leadership to CAAZ as it navigates the evolving landscape of the aviation industry in Zimbabwe and the wider region. His extensive background and international exposure position him well to steer the organization towards continued growth and adherence to global best practices.
