NEWLY REFURBISHED RUPURARA VALLEY LODGE REOPENS IN NYANGA
On August 29, 2024, the hospitality industry in Zimbabwe witnessed a significant milestone: the opening of the rebranded and luxurious Rupurara Valley Lodge, in the Eastern Highlands. The lodge had undergone a complete transformation, emerging with a fresh look and renewed appeal. A group of 15 travel and tourism professionals were invited on a familiarization trip to experience the refurbished facility firsthand.

Led by the affable host Rutendo Saurombe, representing both Rupurara Valley Lodge and Cresta Hotels, the group included travel writers, social media influencers, photographers, hospitality gurus, and travel agency operators. Among the notable attendees were Paul Matamisa and Stan Higgins, two of Zimbabwe’s leading hospitality and tourism experts, and Pedia Matamisa, a pioneering hotelier in her own right.
A restored gem
Originally opened in 1997, as Inn On Rupurara, it had painfully ceased operations in 2017, under the disbelieving eyes of founder and legendary hotelier Gordon Adams (RIP). The Public Service Commission, believers in the huge potential of the local tourism industry, are now the owners of Rupurara Valley Lodge, in a 10-year management agreement forged with the renowned Cresta Hotels Group. This partnership, leveraging Cresta’s vast resources and pan-African expertise, has breathed new life into the lodge and Nyanga.
The lodge’s name is derived from the nearby Muparawara Mountain, a towering landmark visible from a distance. Under the leadership of experienced hotelier Godfrey Dzingai as General Manager, Rupurara Valley Lodge offers a unique blend of natural beauty and luxurious accommodations.

A serene retreat
Located 256 kilometres from Harare, Rupurara Vally Lodge is surrounded by the scenic beauty of the Nyanga mountains. The lodge was developed from virgin bush in a rocky and wooded valley, providing guests with a tranquil and picturesque setting, typical of the African bush. The Cape Country-style architecture, featuring local stone and wood, blends seamlessly with the natural surroundings.
The estate surrounding the lodge once boasted a variety of plains game, and a spectacular drive down to the Nyangombe River leads to the estate’s own trout farm. The inn’s management plans to restock the wildlife estate in the future.
A welcoming experience
Upon arrival, the familiarization team was advised to wear sturdy shoes due to the undulating terrain of Nyanga. Designated footpaths around the lodge ensure safety, and guests were encouraged to stay on these paths to avoid encounters with wildlife.

In a brief welcome presentation, one of the lodge managers emphasized the importance of respecting the natural environment and avoiding littering. He also highlighted the amenities offered by the lodge, including en-suite rooms with electric blankets, tea and coffee making facilities, a 24-hour tea lounge, a library, a game room, and the Miombo Restaurant.
The lodge’s management discussed plans to repopulate the game park and trout streams, aiming to restore the area’s wildlife. Higgins, a familiar face with the lodge’s history, shared his insights and offered advice to the current management and representatives of Cresta.
Luxurious accommodations
Rupurara Valley Lodge offers a range of beautifully constructed rooms, including waterfront suites overlooking a stunning water feature. All rooms feature ensuites and tasteful Cape Country-style décor, providing guests with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The highlight of the accommodations is the Shumba Suite, a luxurious presidential suite with a sauna, private chef, private bathroom, and stunning views of the river valley. Room heaters are provided for chilly mountain evenings.
A destination of excellence
Rupurara Valley Lodge has the potential to surpass its previous achievements and attract both local and international visitors. The inn’s plans to revive trout hatcheries, horse trails, and reintroduce plains game will further enhance its appeal.
Higgins emphasized the importance of marketing Rupurara Valley Lodge as a destination for longer stays, highlighting its numerous attractions and activities. He also suggested targeting the self-drive market from South Africa and Mozambique, particularly the expatriate population in the Beira Corridor seeking a refreshing getaway. The domestic travellers’ market is rapidly growing and shouldn’t be overlooked.
Activities and attractions
Rupurara Valley Lodge offers a variety of activities, including visits to Muparawara Mountain, bird watching, game drives, yachting, boating, rowing, fly-fishing, canoeing, hiking, birdwatching, and swimming in the natural pools at Nyangombe.
The nearby Nyanga National Park, a 38-minute drive from the lodge, provides opportunities for game viewing, hiking, and exploring Mount Nyangani, Zimbabwe’s highest point.

A promising future
With its stunning natural surroundings, luxurious accommodations, and diverse range of activities, Rupurara Valley Lodge is poised to become a firm favourite for both local and international visitors. As the lodge continues to evolve and expand its offerings, it is set to solidify its position as a premier luxury destination in Nyanga and the greater Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe.
