Stanley “weMbizi” Mutanga: Zimbabwean Sculptor in Canada

Zimbabwean sculptor Stanley “weMbizi” Mutanga is currently the visiting artist at Gunguo Art Gallery and History Farm in Canada. Mutanga is known for his figurative sculptures, which often depict animals and people. His work is characterised by its bold use of colour and intricate detail.

Gunguo Art Gallery recently opened its doors in Kingston, Ontario, a picturesque city on the shores of Lake Ontario. The gallery is located on the premises of Gunguo Art and History Farm and aims to promote and showcase the exquisite artworks created by Simukai Sculptures, an innovative art incubator based in Kwekwe. Simukai Sculptures was established in 2017 with the support of the founders and art curators of Gunguo Art and History Farm, Gillian Kupakuwana-Suk and William Suk.

Mutanga was born in 1977 in Murehwa. He began carving at a young age, and his talent was quickly recognized by his teachers. He went on to study sculpture at the National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe, where he graduated with a diploma in fine art.

After graduating, Mutanga worked as a sculptor in Zimbabwe. He won several awards for his work, and his sculptures were exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the country. This year, he was invited to be the visiting artist at Gunguo Art Gallery and History Farm in Canada.

Embarking on his first international venture, Stanley’s artistic journey began on 1July this year. With his unique artistic vision, Stanley draws inspiration from daily life and the rich Shona tradition, infusing his sculptures with captivating narratives. At Gunguo, Mutanga is creating a new series of sculptures inspired by the Canadian landscape. He is also giving workshops and lectures on Zimbabwean art and culture.

Mutanga is a talented sculptor who is passionate about his work. He is committed to sharing his art with the world, and he is excited to be in Canada to share his Zimbabwean heritage with a new audience.

The artist is a member of the Simukai Sculpture Collective, a group of Zimbabwean sculptors who work together to promote the country’s art. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums at home, in South Africa, the United States and Canada. He achieved his first milestone in 2019 when he received the National Arts Merit Award (NAMA) in 3D Art, an honour recognizing his talent and contribution to Zimbabwean sculpture.
