ZTA REINFORCES CONSUMER PROTECTION ROLE
The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting visitors to the country, stating that every tourist deserves a safe, fair, and memorable experience, and pointing to its consumer protection mandate as the mechanism through which that standard is upheld.
In a public statement, ZTA said its Inspections team, working under the enforcement powers granted by the Tourism Act, plays a central role in ensuring accountability across the country’s tourism sector. According to the authority, this includes investigating complaints lodged by visitors, managing disputes that arise between tourists and tourism operators, and taking corrective action against businesses found to be non-compliant with regulatory requirements.
The statement outlined a clear channel for visitors who feel they have been let down by registered tourism facilities. ZTA said any tourist who has had a negative experience at such a facility should come forward, emphasising that the authority exists specifically to assist in these situations and to ensure that grievances are addressed through a formal process rather than being left unresolved.
At the same time, ZTA placed responsibility squarely on tourism operators themselves, stating plainly that it is both a legal and ethical obligation for businesses to deliver on the promises made to their guests. The authority framed this obligation not simply as a matter of regulatory compliance, but as a broader commitment to maintaining the integrity of the tourism industry as a whole.
Underpinning the statement is a recognition that consumer trust forms the foundation of a sustainable tourism sector. ZTA said protecting that trust is a shared responsibility, calling on both visitors and industry stakeholders to help safeguard standards across registered tourism facilities nationwide.
The announcement comes amid ongoing efforts by tourism authorities across the region to strengthen oversight of the hospitality and travel sectors, as destinations increasingly compete for international visitors who expect not only memorable experiences but also assurances of safety, fair treatment, and reliable service. For Zimbabwe, a country whose tourism industry relies heavily on its reputation among international travellers, maintaining consistent standards across registered operators is seen as critical to sustaining visitor confidence and repeat business.
By highlighting the role of its Inspections team and the legal backing provided by the Tourism Act, ZTA appears to be signalling a more visible enforcement posture, encouraging both transparency from operators and active reporting from visitors. The authority’s message suggests an ongoing effort to formalise complaint resolution processes, ensuring that disputes between tourists and operators are handled through official channels rather than informal or unresolved means.
ZTA did not specify particular cases or operators in its statement, framing the message instead as a general reminder of the protections available to visitors and the responsibilities expected of registered tourism businesses operating within Zimbabwe.
