By Martin Chemhere

Zimbabwe recently showed its commitment to its burgeoning tourism sector with the official opening of the prestigious Khami Lounge and the commissioning of the new National Handling Ground Equipment at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. The event, officiated by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Hon. Felix Mhona, highlighted the vital and inseparable relationship between transport and tourism as key drivers of the nation’s economic growth.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Mhona emphasized that a world-class tourism industry cannot exist without efficient and reliable aviation services. “Transport and tourism are inseparable engines of growth, driving Zimbabwe’s vision of seamless travel where every journey begins as a memorable adventure,” he stated. The newly acquired equipment, which will also be deployed at Victoria Falls and Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airports, is set to revolutionize ground handling operations. It will enhance baggage handling, improve service reliability, and ensure a smooth and rapid turnaround for aircraft, sending a clear signal to the world that Zimbabwe is a premier travel destination with state-of-the-art facilities.

Closing the event, the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon. Barbara Rwodzi, hailed the milestone as a tangible symbol of progress. She underscored that the essence of tourism extends beyond iconic attractions, encompassing the warmth of the Zimbabwean welcome and the efficiency of the services provided to every visitor.

This development is particularly timely, as Zimbabwe has recently been thrust into the global spotlight. According to Kayak’s 2025 Travel Check-in Report, Zimbabwe has been ranked the best country to visit, an accolade that reflects the nation’s exceptional blend of breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and world-class safari experiences. This prestigious ranking is supported by a significant surge in flight searches to major cities like Harare and Bulawayo, indicating a rising global interest in the country.

As tourist arrivals continue to grow, these advancements in transport and hospitality infrastructure guarantee smooth journeys and exceptional experiences, further cementing Zimbabwe’s status as a must-visit destination. The collaboration between the transport and tourism sectors is a testament to the nation’s strategic vision for sustainable growth, ensuring that every visitor’s journey is a seamless and unforgettable adventure.
