ZIMBABWE TO HOST GLOBAL WETLANDS CONFERENCE
Zimbabwe is poised to take centre stage in global environmental conservation as it prepares to host the 15th Meeting of the Contracting Parties on the Convention on Wetlands (COP15) from July 23 to 31, 2025. The prestigious event, set to unfold at the iconic Elephant Hills Hotel in Victoria Falls, will draw delegates from around the world, solidifying Zimbabwe’s commitment to ecological stewardship.
Under the overarching theme, “Protecting Wetlands for our Common Future,” COP15 will serve as a crucial platform for international collaboration, knowledge sharing, and policy development concerning the conservation and sustainable management of wetlands. These vital ecosystems, often referred to as nature’s kidneys, play a pivotal role in maintaining biodiversity, regulating water cycles, and mitigating climate change.
Mangaliso Ndlovu, the Acting Minister of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, has assured the international community that Zimbabwe is diligently preparing for the conference. The Ministry of Industry and Commerce has highlighted the significant strides made in infrastructure development, logistical arrangements, and stakeholder engagement. The selection of Victoria Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage site, further underscores the country’s dedication to showcasing its natural treasures while addressing pressing environmental challenges.
The conference will feature a series of plenary sessions, technical workshops, and side events, providing a comprehensive platform for discussions on wetland conservation, restoration, and sustainable utilization. Delegates will explore innovative strategies for addressing the threats posed by climate change, pollution, and unsustainable development practices.
Hosting COP15 presents a unique opportunity for Zimbabwe to showcase its commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection. The conference will also provide a platform for local communities to share their traditional knowledge and experiences in wetland management, contributing to a more inclusive and equitable approach to conservation. The event is expected to boost tourism and create economic opportunities for the region, leaving a lasting legacy for both the nation and the global environment.
