ZIMBABWE LAUNCHES WHATSAPP TOOL FOR WILDLIFE SAFETY
Zimbabwe’s magnificent wildlife is a celebrated national treasure, drawing visitors from across the globe and serving as a cornerstone of the country’s natural heritage. However, for those living on the frontlines of the wilderness, the daily reality of sharing space with powerful creatures can be incredibly challenging.
In an innovative move to bridge the gap between conservation and community safety, Wild Africa and its partners have launched “Wildlife Info,” a revolutionary digital resource designed to mitigate human-wildlife conflict through the power of instant communication.
Recognizing that timely information can be the difference between a peaceful encounter and a tragic accident, this new initiative provides a free and easy-to-use WhatsApp tool. Through simply sending a message, residents can access a wealth of practical advice on how to live safely alongside iconic but potentially dangerous species such as elephants, lions, crocodiles, baboons, and hippos.
The platform is designed for maximum accessibility, allowing users to select their preferred language between English and Ndebele before following intuitive prompts to navigate a range of critical topics.
The tool offers comprehensive guidance on protecting families, property, and crops from animal incursions. Beyond immediate safety measures, it serves as a vital reporting hub where users can alert authorities to wildlife conflicts, injuries, or even wildlife-related crimes.
One of the most significant features of the platform is its educational component; it helps users understand the complex behaviours of elephants and other species, fostering a deeper sense of empathy and awareness. Whether a farmer needs to know how to deter a straying bull elephant or a villager needs quick answers to urgent wildlife questions, the tool provides expert insights in the palm of their hand.
The campaign has gained significant momentum through the support of prominent Zimbabwean ambassadors, including Rumbidzai Takawira, Sandra Ndebele, Moreangels Mbizah, and Mzoe7—popularly known as Mr. Gagagugu. These influential voices are encouraging citizens to embrace Wildlife Info as a primary resource for peaceful coexistence. They emphasize that true conservation means protecting both people and nature simultaneously. This vital initiative is a collaborative effort brought to life by Wild Africa, Zimparks, Save the Elephants, the Elephant Crisis Fund, and Wildlife Conservation Action.
The project also benefits from the localized expertise and support of Tikobane Trust-Zimbabwe and Connected Conservation, ensuring that Zimbabwe’s human and animal populations can thrive together in a shared landscape.
