ZIMBABWE CROWNED THE WORLD’S TOP NATURAL WONDER DESTINATION FOR 2026
Zimbabwe has once again captured the global tourism spotlight, having been named Destination of the Year for Natural Wonders at ITB Berlin 2026, one of the world’s leading travel trade fairs, in a recognition that has placed the country firmly on the map for nature lovers, adventure travellers, and safari enthusiasts worldwide.
The award adds to a string of international accolades for Zimbabwe heading into 2026, following its recognition as a top global travel destination by Forbes magazine. Together, these honours have drawn significant attention to the country’s natural attractions, including the iconic Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park, and the Zambezi River, cementing Zimbabwe’s status as one of the standout destinations on the African continent.
The recognition comes amid a remarkable surge in the country’s tourism performance. According to the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, international arrivals rose by 11 percent in the first quarter of 2026, reaching 384,561 visitors, while tourism receipts climbed 14 percent to US$251 million over the same period. Investment in the sector has also grown sharply, with new figures showing tourism-related investment reaching US$678 million in the first quarter of the year, a 438 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025, driven largely by new activity in eco-tourism, safari lodges, and conservation partnerships.
Regional markets continue to form the backbone of Zimbabwe’s visitor numbers, accounting for roughly 75 percent of international arrivals, with notable growth recorded from Mozambique, South Africa, Malawi, and Zambia. At the same time, overseas markets have shown strong momentum, with Britain and Ireland recording the fastest year-on-year growth among international source markets. Domestic tourism has also strengthened considerably, with 2.62 million local trips recorded in the first quarter of 2026, up from 1.94 million during the same period last year.
Zimbabwe’s growing international reputation was further reinforced at ITB Berlin 2026, where Tourism Minister Barbara Rwodzi was honoured with the Tourism Minister of the Year award for Africa, recognising the country’s coordinated efforts across government, the private sector, and tourism operators to build a sustainable and high-quality tourism industry.
Despite these gains, industry stakeholders have acknowledged that challenges remain, including geopolitical instability and rising fuel costs, both of which continue to pose risks to sustained growth in the sector. Nevertheless, with back-to-back international recognitions and record-breaking visitor and investment figures, Zimbabwe’s tourism sector appears well positioned to build on its momentum as it continues to showcase its natural wonders, cultural heritage, and world-class safari experiences to a growing global audience.
