ZIM RECORDS MARKED GROWTH IN TOURISM ACTIVITIES AROUND HWANGE NATIONAL PARK

TOURISM activity has gained momentum in and around Hwange National Park, driven by a surge in visitors, expanded facilities and buoyant trophy hunting.

Operators in Matabeleland North Province have invested in new infrastructure and diversified experiences to cater for both leisure and business travellers.

The industry players have described the prevailing situation as marked “recovery in demand”.

The developments tally with authorities’ projected US$20 million in earnings from the hunting industry in 2026, with communities already reporting tangible benefits from the 2025 season.

The Association for Tourism Hwange said operators are responding to growing interest by broadening the park’s appeal beyond traditional wildlife viewing. Coordinator Ms Shamar Mawoko said facility expansion is central to the strategy.

“We have Gwango Heritage Resort, which is constructing a conference facility with a capacity of up to 250 people. We also have Gobello Farm, which offers farm tours to international visitors, locals and students.

“There has been a noticeable increase in tourism activities within the park and this has encouraged us to expand our facilities,” she said.

The product diversification is meant to create new market segments, including corporate events, student tours and strengthened year-round accommodation occupancy.

Ms Mawoko said the current investments were expected to translate into broader economic gains.

“As we move forward, we expect to welcome more tourists, which will assist in the development of Zimbabwe and further strengthen the tourism sector,” she said.

Tourism operators say the renewed interest reflects a global shift in travel preferences, with visitors increasingly seeking deeper engagement with destinations.

Director of Kakori Conservation, Mr Dave Bennette, said demand was growing for experiences that connected tourists with people, local culture and wildlife experiences.
