WILDLIFE AND ENVIRONMENT ZIMBABWE MOURNS THE PASSING OF JEAN WHILEY
It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that Wildlife & Environment Zimbabwe (WEZ), alongside the broader environmental community, acknowledges the passing of Jean Whiley. A dedicated conservationist, a loyal friend, and a longstanding pillar of both WEZ and the Matobo Conservation Society (MCS), Jean leaves behind a profound legacy of environmental stewardship that spans decades. Her loss leaves a massive void in the organizations she served and the natural landscapes she loved so dearly.
Jean gave countless years of service to conservation in Zimbabwe, not through fanfare or a desire for public recognition, but through quiet commitment, total reliability, and a genuine passion for the natural world. She belonged to that rare class of individuals whose everyday contributions were woven into the very fabric of the organizations they supported, ensuring their operational success behind the scenes.
Within WEZ, Jean was a longtime, devoted member who embraced the vital, practical elements of wildlife preservation. She played a central role in the annual game counts, taking on the meticulous and exhaustive work of compiling, auditing, and organizing game count data. This vital historical information remains absolutely foundational to national conservation efforts, providing the baseline metrics required for long-term wildlife monitoring across the country’s national parks and sanctuaries.
Beyond her scientific and administrative contributions, Jean was an enthusiastic, familiar face at community events. She was a vibrant participant in WEZ’s ProAm quizzes and generously dedicated her time and energy to supporting the junior schools quiz program.
Through her active involvement, she helped nurture curiosity, expand ecological knowledge, and instill a lifelong love for the environment in younger generations of Zimbabweans.
Her historical contributions to the Matobo Conservation Society were equally significant. Jean served faithfully for many years across various critical administration roles, gracefully navigating the demanding responsibilities of Treasurer, while previously serving as both Secretary and Membership Officer.
Her steady hand, organizational mastery, and unwavering dedication helped sustain the Society through many complex years of conservation work, specifically protecting the unique natural and cultural heritage of the ancient Matobo Hills.
However, beyond the formal titles and systemic responsibilities, Jean will be remembered most for her personal warmth, her immediate willingness to help, her quiet humor, and her reassuring, dependable presence. She was someone who simply got things done thoughtfully and carefully, without ever seeking attention.
True conservation work is rarely built on outspoken voices alone; it relies heavily on the steadfast, passionate people who dedicate their lives behind the scenes to protecting vulnerable wildlife, habitats, and communities.
Jean Whiley was the absolute embodiment of that steadfast spirit. Heartfelt condolences from the entire conservation community are extended to her loving husband—WEZ Vice Chairman Robert—as well as her family, friends, and colleagues. May she rest in peace.
