UN TOURISM DELEGATION IMMERSED IN VICTORIA FALLS

The thunderous roar of Mosi-Oa-Tunya, the “Smoke That Thunders,” provided a powerful backdrop for a high-level engagement between Zimbabwe and the UN Tourism Committee on Tourism and Sustainability delegation. This historic visit, occurring during the committee’s 23rd meeting in Victoria Falls, saw international delegates moving from formal deliberations to the mist-drenched rainforest of the Victoria Falls National Park.

Led by the Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Dr. Takaruza Munyanyiwa, and the UN Tourism Director of Sustainable Tourism and Resilience, Dr. Dirk Glaesser, the tour served as a practical showcase of how one of the world’s Seven Natural Wonders is being preserved through world-class stewardship.

As the delegation navigated the iconic rainforest pathways, they were presented with a compelling narrative of proactive conservation that extends far beyond the scenery. Zimbabwe’s approach to managing the site involves a sophisticated blend of traditional preservation and modern innovation.

The visit highlighted the importance of the park’s protected pathways, which are designed to allow thousands of visitors to experience the falls without triggering soil erosion or damaging the delicate flora. Additionally, the presence of strategic firebreaks shields the unique rainforest ecosystem from the surrounding dry woodland fires, ensuring that the micro-climate generated by the falls remains intact for future generations.

Sustainability at Victoria Falls is also defined by a rigorous focus on waste management and environmental integrity. The delegation observed innovative systems in action, including tamper-proof, animal-resistant bins that prevent local wildlife from scavenging for food.

A comprehensive litter monitoring program and robust recycling initiatives were showcased as evidence of a pristine environment maintained through meticulous daily operations. These efforts ensure that the visual and ecological purity of the Zambezi River’s greatest cascade remains undisturbed by the pressures of high-volume international tourism, reflecting a deep respect for the natural world.

This immersive experience underscores Zimbabwe’s “Whole-of-Government” approach to tourism, where conservation is not an isolated activity but a central pillar of national policy. By demonstrating these deliberate efforts to the UN Tourism leadership, Zimbabwe has reinforced its position as a global leader in sustainable tourism management.

The visit concluded with a shared recognition that for the tourism sector to thrive, it must exist in absolute harmony with nature. As Victoria Falls continues to draw the world to its banks, the commitment to stewardship ensures that the “Smoke That Thunders” will continue to be a symbol of resilience and natural wonder for centuries to come.
