THE NATIONAL ART GALLERY CELEBRATES 68 YEARS
Text by Olga Dzingo
The nation and the National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe are celebrating its 68th Anniversary tomorrow. Established in 1957 as the Rhodes Centenary Gallery, the NGZ has played a pivotal role in promoting and developing visual art in the country. It has been the fountain for artists across the nation, serving as a medium and mouthpiece for artists to the public, speaking volumes that mere words cannot comprehend. It has been the storehouse of culture, empowering communities and youths from around the nation with knowledge and power through art.
The event seeks to unite artists and the public from around the nation and beyond through visual art. The event will be characterized by a vast number of activities such as an exhibition in the Sculpture Garden and programs that cater to all ages and cultures within the Gallery. This was stated in a Press Release from the NGZ’s Public Relations Department.
“To commemorate 68 years of incorporation, the National Gallery of Zimbabwe will observe a day of events for the Public, with the support of the Friends of the Gallery. Activities on the day will include an exhibition in the Sculpture Garden and a Public Program aimed at all demographics in the Gallery.”
The event will be free of charge to all members of the public and artists. Various activities will be held to allow everyone, regardless of age, gender, or culture, a chance to be part of the event.
The National Art Gallery has not only been a place to display artworks but also a beacon of hope and a place of solace and power; it has enriched communities with power through knowledge. Its School of Visual Art and Design and Education and Public Programming provide guidance on curriculum development and career guidance in all parts of the Republic.
Youth empowerment still stands as the key aim and goal of the Gallery, and over the decades, the NGZ has remained constant in its original mission. This was voiced by Fadzai Muchemwa, the Curator of Contemporary Art at the NGZ.
“The young are always at the core of our programming. Since its inception, the NGZ has played a vital role in uplifting youth and communities through art. We’ve seen how creative expression can inspire confidence, spark dialogue, and open new paths for young people. It’s been an honour to witness that transformation as a curator.”
