SUMMIT TO EMPOWER YOUNG AFRICANS IN TOURISM

By Martin Chemhere

Nairobi is set to become the epicentre of youth-driven tourism innovation, hosting the Africa Youth in Tourism Innovation Summit & Challenge from June 10-13. This marks the first time the event will be held in the Kenyan capital, with a determined focus on empowering young Africans to spearhead the future of tourism and conservation.

The summit aims to transcend a typical conference, positioning itself as a catalyst for change. The event will serve as a platform to showcase the potential of intra-African trade within the tourism sector, emphasizing the crucial role young people play in shaping its trajectory. The city was selected to host the summit for the next three years, based on its favourable business environment and abundant entrepreneurial spirit.

Addressing key challenges faced by young entrepreneurs, such as unemployment, limited access to capital, and educational disparities, the summit is designed to bridge the gap between innovators and investors. A key feature is an Innovation Challenge, providing the winner with an opportunity to pitch their ideas to prominent African investors in Mauritius later this year.

Sustainability is a central theme, with a comprehensive program that includes desktop exhibitions of youth-led tourism ventures, networking sessions, career guidance, and a hosted buyer program. A dedicated masterclass will focus on empowering young women in tourism, and fostering female entrepreneurship.

The summit will also highlight the importance of travel technology in streamlining tourism and enhancing visitor experiences in the digital age. Digital marketing strategies will be emphasized to broaden reach and diversify the tourism sector.

Organizers are keen to shift the narrative surrounding African tourism, moving beyond traditional wildlife and beach experiences to encourage young entrepreneurs to develop a wider range of tourist offerings. The event seeks to cultivate a more diversified and resilient tourism sector, driven by the innovation and energy of Africa’s youth.
