NRZ CONDUCTS TRIAL RUN FOR RAIL LEISURE ON HARARE-MUTARE ROUTE
The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has successfully conducted a trial run of its Rail Leisure train, a special service set to commence its first trip tomorrow, September 5, 2025, on the scenic Harare to Mutare route. This service is a key component of the upcoming Sanganai Hlanganani Kumbanayi Tourism Expo, which will be held in Mutare from September 10-12, 2025.
The trial run, which went smoothly, was conducted from Chegutu to Harare and included key stakeholders from the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) and the government. The successful test solidifies the NRZ’s readiness to reintroduce this leisure service, which will not only provide a unique travel experience but also contribute to the promotion of domestic tourism. The train features refurbished luxury coaches with dining and viewing areas, offering passengers a chance to experience Zimbabwe’s landscapes from a new perspective.
With a one-way ticket priced at US$60, the service aims to be an affordable option for local, regional, and international visitors attending the expo. While the service has been tailored for this event, the NRZ has indicated that it is considering extending rail leisure travel options in the future. This initiative aligns with the Sanganai/Hlanganani expo’s theme, “Devolving Sustainable Tourism Development, Our Future,” by expanding tourism offerings beyond traditional modes of transport and popular destinations.
This initiative comes at a time when the NRZ is facing calls to reinstate its regular, affordable inter-city passenger services. While the new leisure train may not be a solution to daily commuter needs, its launch for a major tourism event signifies a strategic effort by the parastatal to tap into the tourism market and demonstrate the potential of its railway network. The inaugural train will depart Harare at 7:00 AM on September 5, with other trips scheduled for September 7 and 9. Return trips from Mutare are set for September 6 and 8.
