MATOBO HILLS TO SPARKLE AS INAUGURAL GIN FESTIVAL CELEBRATES CENTURY OF CONSERVATION

The ancient, granite-strewn landscape of Matobo National Park is set to transform into a vibrant hub of culture and botanical excellence this spring as it prepares to host the highly anticipated Matobo Gin Festival 2026. Scheduled for September 26 at the scenic Sandy Spruit Dam, the event marks a dual celebration of Zimbabwe’s burgeoning craft spirit industry and the historic centennial anniversary of the Matobo National Park.

Established in 1926, the park is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its balancing rock formations and its status as a critical sanctuary for the majestic black and white rhino.

The festival promises an immersive experience that blends the art of distillation with the raw beauty of the African bush. Organized in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, the event highlights a shared commitment to “Harmony with Nature,” ensuring that the festivities remain environmentally conscious while providing a world-class tourism draw.

Attendees will have the unique opportunity to sample a diverse array of premium spirits, headlined by Matobo African Gin, which draws its inspiration from the local flora and the spiritual essence of the Matopos hills.

Beyond the tasting tents, the Sandy Spruit Dam will serve as a breathtaking backdrop for a day of sophisticated leisure. The festival lineup is expected to feature live acoustic performances, artisanal food pairings curated by local chefs, and interactive sessions with master distillers who are redefining the Southern African beverage landscape.

The centennial theme adds a layer of historical gravity to the event, with planned exhibitions showcasing the park’s journey over the last hundred years—from its early colonial designation to its current standing as a global beacon for biodiversity and cultural heritage.

As Zimbabwe continues to position itself as a premier destination for experiential travel, the Matobo Gin Festival stands out as a flagship event for 2026. It offers a rare invitation for locals and international visitors alike to reconnect with the land in a celebration of liquid art and natural wonder. Tickets for the event are being managed through the Flippin Tickets platform, and interest is already surging among the country’s social elite and conservation enthusiasts.

As the sun sets behind the iconic silhouettes of the Matobo hills this September, the festival will likely be remembered as a landmark moment where heritage, wildlife, and the spirit of Zimbabwe toasted to a sustainable future.
