LODGES AND RESORTS ELEVATE OUTDOOR FURNITURE AS A DESIGN STATEMENT

From the spray-drenched terraces of Victoria Falls to the calm shores of Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe’s tourism industry is investing fresh attention in an unlikely detail: poolside and garden furniture. Lodges, safari camps, and city hotels alike are reimagining the humble sun lounger as a design centrepiece — one that shapes guest experience and doubles as a marketing asset in an increasingly visual, social-media-driven travel market.

Across the country’s leading properties, bold cabana stripes and coordinated cushioning are replacing plain, utilitarian deck chairs. Crisp black-and-white and deep green-and-cream patterns bring a graphic, resort-style elegance to lawns overlooking rivers and bushveld, while softer neutral tones suit the more relaxed, nature-immersed atmosphere favoured by safari lodges near Hwange and Mana Pools. The result is outdoor seating that feels considered rather than incidental — a signal that Zimbabwean hospitality is competing on design polish as much as on scenery.

Consistency has become a hallmark of this shift. Matching cushions, uniform umbrella canopies, and coordinated metal frame finishes — whether powder-coated white or classic wrought iron — create a cohesive look across pool decks and viewing lawns. Industry watchers note that a well-styled outdoor lounging area, complete with rolled towels and matching side tables, is now among the most photographed and shared aspects of a stay, giving properties valuable exposure to prospective travellers browsing platforms like Instagram and TripAdvisor.

Practicality remains central to these upgrades. Many newer lounger designs include wheeled front legs for easy repositioning on uneven ground, multi-position adjustable backrests, and weather-resistant fabrics able to withstand Zimbabwe’s intense sun, seasonal rains, and heavy guest turnover. For riverside and falls-adjacent properties in particular, durability against moisture and humidity is a key purchasing consideration.

This renewed focus on outdoor furniture arrives as Zimbabwe’s tourism sector continues its post-pandemic recovery, with operators competing for a growing share of regional and international visitors drawn to Victoria Falls, the Eastern Highlands, and the country’s national parks. Hospitality consultants argue that small design investments — from statement loungers to thoughtfully placed side tables — can meaningfully influence guest perception and online reviews, at a relatively low cost compared with larger infrastructure upgrades.

As competition intensifies among Zimbabwean lodges, camps, and hotels, outdoor furniture is emerging as an accessible yet impactful way for properties to differentiate themselves — proving that even a well-dressed sun lounger can help sell a destination.
