LAND IDENTIFIED FOR THE EXPANSION OF CHARLES PRINCE AIRPORT
Charles Prince Airport is poised for a major transformation following the identification of a significant tract of land for its expansion. In a joint tour today, the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Hon. F.T Mhona, and the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Dr. A. Masuka, assessed a vast 300-hectare piece of land that will be added to the airport’s existing 171 hectares. This expansion is aimed at transforming the airport into a world-class international gateway.
The proposed expansion is a key component of Zimbabwe’s broader strategy to modernize its aviation infrastructure and leverage the country’s strategic location in the region. Hon. Mhona emphasized that the ultimate goal is to develop a much larger, international-standard airport capable of accommodating two or more runways. This will allow it to handle increased air traffic and a wider range of aircraft types, positioning Zimbabwe as a key player in regional aviation. The Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) also highlighted the airport’s unique access to a railway line, which provides multimodal connectivity and can streamline logistics for air freight.
The selection of Charles Prince Airport for this ambitious project is no accident. Its strategic location in Mount Hampden, near the new Cyber City and the New Parliament Building, makes it the ideal hub for future international operations. This proximity will facilitate seamless travel for business leaders, government officials, and tourists, directly supporting the development of the new city and the nation’s economic growth.
Hon. Mhona extended his gratitude to Dr. Masuka and his Ministry for making the critical land available for what he described as a national project. In response, Dr. Masuka confirmed that his ministry is finalizing preliminary feasibility studies and will soon hand over the land to the Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) to ensure that development can begin without delay. The land, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Zvimba Rural District Council, is the next critical step for project commencement, pending collaboration with the Surveyor General.
