MASSIVE WILDLIFE ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN ALONG BULAWAYO-VICTORIA FALLS ROAD
MASSIVE WILDLIFE ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN ALONG BULAWAYO-VICTORIA FALLS ROAD
A vital five-day wildlife road safety awareness campaign is officially underway at Cross Mabale along the busy Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Highway. Running from June 1st to June 5th, this major collaborative effort brings together Painted Dog Conservation (PDC), the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks), the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ).
Representatives from these prominent organizations have stationed themselves at a critical checkpoint to engage directly with passing motorists, public transport drivers, and haulage truck operators.
The target area at Cross Mabale is not chosen at random. This specific stretch of the highway intersects a globally important ecological corridor that borders Hwange National Park. It is a critical wildlife zone where a variety of animals, including the highly endangered African painted dog, frequently cross the tarmac in search of food and water.
Over the years, speeding and nighttime driving have turned this road into a perilous zone. High-speed vehicle-wildlife collisions carry devastating consequences, often resulting in tragic human fatalities, severe injuries, costly vehicular damage, and the heartbreaking loss of precious, protected wildlife.
The core message being delivered by the multi-agency team to commuters is simple and direct: Your life matters, and so does wildlife. Organizers are appealing to the conscience and responsibility of every road user. By simply slowing down, staying highly alert during peak wildlife movement hours, and respecting designated wildlife crossing zones, every single driver has the power to prevent accidents and save lives.
Drivers are being handed educational materials and engaged in brief, impactful conversations emphasizing how a minor reduction in travel speed dramatically increases reaction times when an animal suddenly emerges from the bush.
This critical campaign underscores the power of institutional unity in solving complex conservation and public safety challenges. The organizers have expressed profound gratitude to all the diverse stakeholders who have proactively come together to fund, plan, and execute this important initiative.
However, institutional efforts can only do so much on their own. The ultimate success of the campaign rests in the hands of the traveling public. All road users are being strongly encouraged to play their part in modifying their driving habits, ensuring that Zimbabwe’s highways become significantly safer for both humans and the spectacular wildlife that calls this landscape home.
