JABULANI SAFARIS: A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO CONSERVATION AND COMMUNITY

By Martin Chemhere

Jabulani Safaris, an integral part of the Shangani Sanctuary, is setting a powerful example in Zimbabwe’s tourism sector by blending luxury safari experiences with a deep commitment to social responsibility and wildlife conservation. Guided by the philosophy of “Doing The Right Thing For A Better Tomorrow,” the lodge’s mission extends far beyond offering a safari getaway, actively working to uplift local communities and protect precious wildlife for future generations.

A cornerstone of Jabulani’s community efforts is its close relationship with Pezulu School, a local primary school providing education to approximately 80 students. While the school premises are well-kept, basic classroom requirements—such as desks, pens, pencils, and textbooks—are a luxury. To address this, Jabulani has created a program that allows guests and volunteers to become directly involved in the students’ development, contributing to their hopes and dreams. This focus on job creation and education is central to the lodge’s mission, ensuring that the local community is a direct beneficiary of its operations.

On the conservation front, Jabulani Safaris is at the forefront of a new initiative to re-introduce wildlife into the sparsely populated Shangani Sanctuary, an 89,000-hectare game-fenced wildlife sanctuary. The lodge itself provides refuge to over 40 species of wildlife, including large herds of eland, impala, sable, and zebra, as well as a host of birdlife and smaller predators.

This pristine wilderness is preserved for future generations, countering the long-term threats of poaching and human settlement. A crucial part of this conservation effort is a consistent program to expose local children to wildlife, imparting a love for animals and the natural environment.

Jabulani also empowers local inhabitants by giving them a financial stake in the preservation of their wildlife through eco-tourism and agricultural initiatives. This model fosters a lasting and stable ecosystem, ensuring a future for the local families and the wildlife that depend on the land. The lodge itself, nestled in natural savanna and granite kopjes, offers eight thatched en-suite chalets and a separate camp for school groups, providing a comfortable base from which to explore the sanctuary and nearby historic ruins like Nalatale, Bila, and Dhlo.

Jabulani is not just a destination; it’s a living example of how tourism can be a force for good.
