IMPROVING TOURISM THROUGH CONSERVATION

Text by Olga Dzingo

In 2022, Zimbabwe introduced a wetlands policy aimed at protecting, restoring, and sustainably using wetlands as a vital component of sustainable development. This initiative works alongside the Environmental Management Act (Chapter 20:27), which forms the foundation of the country’s environmental protection legislation and directly addresses wetland conservation.

Soon after, Zimbabwe’s Mosi-oa-Tunya (Victoria Falls) was honored with the prestigious “Wetland City” status — a recognition that seeks to improve both international and domestic tourism while conserving our iconic natural landmarks. As the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands approaches, Zimbabwe anticipates a positive boost in the tourism sector. The Ramsar Convention aims to connect people from all walks of life in a unified effort to protect the world’s wetlands.

Why Visit Mosi-oa-Tunya?

Victoria Falls, located along the Zambezi River on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The falls span 1.7 km in width, and during the Zambezi River’s peak flow, nearly 550 million liters of water plunge 70 to 108 meters into the chasm below — every single minute.

The falls themselves are awe-inspiring, creating a magnificent curtain of water that crashes down 93 meters into the gorge. The resulting spray rises high into the air, continuously nourishing the evergreen rainforest that thrives around the area.

The rainforest is a marvel in its own right, filled with vibrant flora and fauna. It resembles a painter’s canvas — bursting with colors, textures, and forms beyond imagination. This lush environment is also home to some of the most exquisite wildlife.

Adding to the experience is the nearby  game park, which is home to Africa’s famous Big Five: the elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard, and white rhino. The park also shelters a variety of other mammals and fish species, including the well-known bream and tiger fish.

See It for Yourself

Why not visit Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, and witness the Creator’s artistry with your own eyes? It’s a destination where beauty surpasses imagination — a place where nature’s wonders come alive.
