GERMANY UNDERSCORES ITS GROWING IMPORTANCE TO DESTINATION ZIMBABWE.

The strategic partnership between Zimbabwe and Germany has reached a significant milestone, as Germany was officially ranked fourth among Zimbabwe’s top international source markets in 2024. This development underscores the European nation’s growing importance to the “Destination Zimbabwe” brand and highlights a successful period of targeted marketing and diplomatic engagement.

Against this vibrant background, the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Honourable Barbara Rwodzi, recently held a high-level meeting with the German Ambassador to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Mr. Christoph Retzlaff. During their discussions, the Minister highlighted the tourism sector’s remarkably strong growth trajectory that has been maintained consistently since 2021. This recovery and subsequent expansion reflect the resilience of the Zimbabwean tourism product and its increasing appeal to the discerning European traveller who seeks authentic and heritage-rich experiences.

Minister Rwodzi used the engagement to emphasize the multifaceted role of tourism in the national agenda, noting that it is a primary driver of inclusive economic growth that benefits local communities directly. She pointed out that beyond the economic figures, the sector serves as a powerful tool for image building, international diplomacy, and the facilitation of trade. The Minister reaffirmed that Zimbabwe’s continued destination marketing efforts remain a top priority, with a focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation with Germany.

A key highlight of this cooperation is the confirmation of Zimbabwe’s participation at the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) in Berlin in March 2026. This premier global trade fair will provide a prestigious stage for Zimbabwe to showcase its diverse tourism offerings and its unique heritage to thousands of industry professionals and potential visitors from across the world.

Looking beyond traditional leisure travel, the Minister highlighted opportunities for much deeper collaboration in the areas of tourism promotion, investment, and knowledge exchange. She specifically pointed to the burgeoning field of “Study Tourism” as a bridge for skills development and academic linkage.

This will be exemplified by an upcoming visit by sixteen students and four lecturers from Potsdam University to Zimbabwe, scheduled to take place from 14 February to 10 March 2026. Such initiatives are seen as vital for fostering long-term professional relationships and providing international scholars with a first-hand look at Zimbabwe’s world-class conservation and hospitality management practices.

Ambassador Retzlaff responded with great enthusiasm, describing Zimbabwe as a fascinating destination with immense tourism potential and an excellent global reputation. He noted that the international community is taking notice of the country’s beauty and safety, citing the prestigious recognition by Forbes Magazine, which named Zimbabwe the World’s Number One Must-Visit Destination in 2025.

The Ambassador also commended the growing direct air connectivity between the two regions, specifically highlighting the role of Eurowings flights in making the destination more accessible to German travellers. He welcomed the Ministry’s continued market exploration initiatives and expressed confidence that the upcoming engagements in 2026 would further solidify the bond between the two nations, ensuring that Zimbabwe remains a top priority for German tourists for years to come.
