FILM MAKER CHAMPIONS AFRICAN TRAVEL JOURNALISM
Renowned travel storyteller and media executive Michaela Guzy has announced an ambitious fundraising campaign to secure finishing funds for the highly anticipated upcoming episode of her global docuseries, “OH THE PEOPLE YOU MEET with Michaela Guzy in Africa’s Eden.” Filmed across the striking landscapes of Zambia and Zimbabwe, the project signals a foundational shift in travel journalism by moving beyond mere destination coverage to directly financing, mentoring, and employing local African cinematic talent.
The campaign stems from an impactful production cycle in Zambia, where Guzy collaborated closely with a cohort of promising young local filmmakers. Deeply moved by their creative vision, technical precision, and authentic regional perspectives, Guzy took the unusual step of personally financing the initial post-production phase. She hired a talented South African film editor to shape the project’s official promotional trailer, establishing a cross-continental workflow designed to build tangible professional credits for regional creatives.
Now, Guzy is opening the project to strategic investors, philanthropic patrons, and corporate sponsors to complete the full episode. The required finishing funds are explicitly earmarked to scale this employment pipeline, with plans to hire an expanded team of African editors for the final post-production stages and secure a sustainable framework for future regional productions.
“I’ve always believed regenerative travel is about more than protecting places,” Guzy stated. “It’s about creating opportunities for people, building careers, and ensuring local voices are helping tell local stories.”
The project leverages an expansive network of premiere conservation and travel stakeholders, including the International Tourism Film Festival Africa, Africa’s Eden, and ProFlight Zambia. Key regional hospitality and conservation leaders—such as Chiawa Safaris, Chichele Presidential, Puku Ridge, Radisson Blu Lusaka, Waterberry Lodge, Shongwe, Shearwater Bungee, Mulberry Mongoose, Mwezi Blu, Project Luangwa, Tribal Textiles, and Conservation Lower Zambezi—provided critical on-the-ground support during filming.
By routing these films through her established global distribution network, Guzy aims to provide these underrepresented filmmakers with unprecedented international visibility. Reflecting on her own personal trajectory from a scholarship student to an international mentor and employer, Guzy emphasizes that the long-term sustainability of African tourism is structurally linked to creative self-determination. The initiative challenges the traditional travel media paradigm, proving that empowering local voices to author their own narratives is the ultimate expression of sustainable cultural stewardship.
