DEBUT OVERNIGHT CAMPING FESTIVAL FOR EWANRIGG BOTANICAL GARDENS

By Martin Chemhere

Get ready for an unforgettable weekend in the wilderness! Ewanrigg Botanical Gardens, a renowned natural haven just 38 kilometers from Harare along Shamva Road, is set to host its first-ever overnight camping festival from April 18th to 19th. This exciting event promises a blend of live entertainment, engaging games, and the serene beauty of nature, making it the perfect getaway for families, friends, and couples.

Attendees will have the unique opportunity to explore the gardens under a blanket of stars, creating lasting memories amidst the stunning flora and fauna. Ewanrigg, known for its world-class collection of aloes and cycads, offers a spectacular backdrop for this inaugural festival. April is an especially opportune time to visit, as the aloe blooming season (April to July) is at its peak. Visitors can witness the vibrant display of these unique plants and observe the diverse birdlife they attract, including sunbirds and other species that frequent the gardens’ dam.

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks), who manage the site, have been instrumental in maintaining and improving the gardens. Their efforts have created a welcoming space for visitors, complete with a picnic area equipped with braai stands, water points, and toilet facilities. Open grounds provide ample space for games, while the numerous walking trails offer opportunities for both guided and unguided exploration. Bird watchers and photography enthusiasts will find plenty to capture, with the gardens boasting a wide variety of indigenous and exotic plants and a rich avian population.

Ewanrigg’s history is as captivating as its landscape. Originally the farm of Harold Christian, who began cultivating aloes in his garden in the early 20th century, the property was named after his brother Ewan, who tragically died in World War I. The name “Rigg” comes from the Welsh word for a ridge. Christian’s passion for botany led him to expand his collection to include cycads and other succulents. In 1950, he generously donated his 1.6-hectare garden to the state, which has since been expanded to 100 hectares under Zimparks’ management. In 1960, it was declared a National Park by Governor Humphrey Gibbs.

Today, Ewanrigg Botanical Gardens stands as a testament to Christian’s vision and a valuable community resource for Harare residents. The gardens’ well-maintained paths and walkways, coupled with the diverse range of attractions and activities, make it an ideal destination for nature lovers of all ages. The camping festival is a new and exciting chapter in Ewanrigg’s story, offering a unique opportunity to experience the magic of this botanical gem.

Festival-goers can look forward to a weekend filled with fun and relaxation, surrounded by the natural beauty of Ewanrigg. From live entertainment and games to tranquil walks amidst the aloes and cycads, the festival promises something for everyone. Don’t miss this chance to venture into the wilderness, explore the gardens, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
