CYCLING COUPLE VUSU THANDO SET TO RETURN TO ZIMBABWE AFTER 22-COUNTRY AFRICAN EXPEDITION
Zimbabwe is preparing to welcome home one of its most remarkable homegrown adventure stories, as husband-and-wife cycling duo Vusumuzi Mnkandla and Thando Chuma, popularly known as Vusu Thando, touch down in the country on Saturday, 4 July, following a gruelling two-year, 22-country, 21,000-kilometre cycling expedition across the African continent.
The couple, who set off on their journey with little more than their bicycles, determination and a shared dream of uniting Africa on two wheels, described Ghana as the grand finale of an odyssey that has taken them through some of the continent’s most diverse landscapes, cultures and communities. In an emotional message shared ahead of their departure, the pair said that as they packed their bicycles for the final leg of the journey and turned their compasses south towards home, their hearts were heavy with gratitude for the experiences and hospitality that had defined their two years on the road.
Reflecting on their time in Ghana, the couple said the West African nation was far more than simply another stop on their map, describing it instead as the culmination of a journey that tested their endurance and resolve at every turn. They recounted rolling across Ghana’s borders on two wheels, tired and weathered from thousands of kilometres of travel, only to be met with warmth and generosity that embodied the true spirit of Akwaaba, Ghana’s renowned tradition of welcome.
Having cycled through 22 countries over two years, the couple say they are now returning home with a singular purpose: to apply the lessons, connections and inspiration gathered along the way toward helping to fix and uplift their own country. Their homecoming, scheduled for 15:40 on Saturday, 4 July, is expected to be met with a large and enthusiastic welcome from Zimbabweans eager to celebrate the pair’s achievement.
