CHIEF DAKAMELA LEADS CULTURAL TOURISM CAMPAIGN IN NKAYI
CHIEF Dakamela from Nkayi District in Matabeleland North Province is leading from the front in terms of marketing the district as a budding tourist destination after hosting visitors from Germany and South Africa who came to experience the beauty of the area.
The tourists are in the province before they leave for Victoria Falls to also experience the majestic wonder of the world.
Nkayi, a district rich in Ndebele heritage, was recently recognised by the Ministry of Tourism as a potential cultural tourism hub. Known for its scenic landscapes, traditional homesteads and vibrant community practices, the area has long been a hidden gem.
The Government’s declaration aims to draw visitors, boost the local economy, and safeguard cultural traditions at risk of fading.
Chief Dakamela has taken it upon himself to spearhead this movement. Through his community-focused initiatives, he has been encouraging elders to share oral histories and mobilising the youth to learn traditional dances and songs.
He is actively identifying key cultural sites such as sacred hills, traditional homesteads, and craft centers that could become major attractions.
“Our culture is our wealth and it is time we share it with the world,” he said.
As part of his efforts to elevate Nkayi’s profile, the Chief recently hosted a delegation of Germany and South African tourists. They will experience local camping and bush-river braais before continuing their journey to Victoria Falls.
Reflecting on the achievement, the Chief emphasised that success required persistence and vision.
“We did not just receive tourism status; we worked for it, supported by the dedication of our people.
“Culture is a living thing; we need to embrace it and reconnect with it, because many people want to consume and experience what we have to offer. I am excited that these tourists have been attracted by our heritage.”
One of the visitors from South Africa had previously attended the district’s Africa Day celebrations.
Their positive experience was a key factor in encouraging the German tourists to include Nkayi in their itinerary. The Chief noted that given Zimbabwe’s recent recognition as a top global tourist destination, building a strong local reputation is more important than ever.
“Let us package our culture, model it, and be proud of it,” he urged.
The visitors were curious about Nkayi’s heritage, and expressed gratitude for the warm welcome.
“It’s incredible to meet the Chief and learn about the traditions here,” said Reinhard Maier. We’re excited to explore Nkayi before proceeding to Victoria Falls,” he added.
When Chief Dakamela stepped onto the dusty roads of Nkayi, he brought a vision to place his people’s culture on Zimbabwe’s tourism map.
After the Ministry of Tourism officially declared the Nkayi district a tourist destination, the Chief launched a cultural tourism campaign, urging locals to showcase their dances, crafts, and stories. For him, it is not just about attracting visitors; it is about preserving identity and creating opportunities for his community.
Despite the enthusiasm, challenges remain. The Chief remains optimistic, however, and is calling on the Government and private sector partners to invest in necessary infrastructure and marketing. He envisions Nkayi becoming a model for community-driven cultural tourism in Zimbabwe.
