BIOTRADE AFRICA EXPERT CLINIC HARNESSES THE BUSINESS OF BIODIVERSITY FOR SUSTAINABLE GROWTH

As the global appetite for sustainable, ethical, and all-natural products reaches an all-time high, the African BioTrade Advisory Group has convened a high-level Expert Clinic to explore the untapped potential of the continent’s natural heritage. Titled “BioTrade Africa,” this session, hosted during the Business of Conservation Conference, serves as a strategic platform to discuss how the commercialization of biodiversity can serve as a powerful tool for both economic empowerment and environmental preservation.

BioTrade is defined as the business of biodiversity, where the soaring demand for sustainable and ethical products is driving rapid growth within the sector. For Africa, which is home to some of the world’s oldest BioTrade value chains, this presents multiple opportunities to support conservation and livelihoods while simultaneously helping to reduce Human-Wildlife Conflict. The clinic highlights that the ethical and all-natural product market is a significant driver for this rapid expansion across the continent.

The clinic features a distinguished panel of experts and conservation entrepreneurs who are actively shaping the landscape of African trade. Gus Le Breton, also known as the African Plant Hunter, is an experienced BioTrade entrepreneur who serves as the chair of the African Baobab Alliance and BioTrade Africa. Joining him is Hilary Sommerlatte, the owner of Arbor Oils and a specialist producer of wild-harvested Frankincense from northern Kenya. Rounding out the panel is Graham McCulloch, the Director of the Ecoexist Trust and co-founder of the Okavango Craft Brewery.

By focusing on ethical supply chains and the sustainable use of indigenous resources, the clinic underscores that conservation and profitable business ventures can coexist effectively. The African BioTrade Advisory Group aims to show that these value chains are essential for supporting both the environment and the people who live within these diverse ecosystems. This Expert Clinic represents a vital step toward ensuring that Africa’s natural wealth translates into tangible prosperity through the business of biodiversity.

The event is supported by various partners including the African Leadership University (ALU) School of Wildlife Conservation, the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), and the African Leadership University.
