AFRICAN SUN SPEARHEADS GREEN REVOLUTION IN VICTORIA FALLS
In a landmark move for environmental conservation and urban sanitation, African Sun has officially donated a state-of-the-art refuse compactor truck to the City of Victoria Falls. This significant contribution marks a pivotal moment in the city’s journey toward a cleaner, more sustainable future, reinforcing African Sun’s long-standing role as a cornerstone of the Zimbabwean hospitality industry and a responsible corporate citizen.
The donation is strategically aligned with African Sun’s robust Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) pillars, which prioritize waste management as a critical component of environmental stewardship. By providing the city with high-capacity, modern waste-handling equipment, the hospitality group is directly addressing the logistical challenges associated with maintaining the pristine condition of Zimbabwe’s premier tourist destination. This initiative ensures cleaner streets, more efficient waste collection cycles, and a healthier living environment for both the local residents of Victoria Falls and the thousands of international tourists who visit the UNESCO World Heritage site annually.
The official handover ceremony took place last week in the suburb of Mkhosana, a vibrant community hub within the city. The event was graced by the Honourable Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe, alongside the Mayor of Victoria Falls, His Worship Councillor Prince Thuso Moyo, and the Town Clerk, Mr. Ronnie Dube. The gathering served as a celebration of successful Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) and a testament to what can be achieved when corporate leaders and local authorities align their goals.
During his keynote address, Minister Garwe lauded the partnership, emphasizing that such collaborations are essential for achieving the nation’s Vision 2030 goals. He commended African Sun for its proactive approach to urban challenges, noting that the private sector’s involvement is a vital catalyst for infrastructure development. In an emotional tribute, City officials affectionately referred to African Sun as the “City’s longest-established corporate resident” and “forever friends,” highlighting the deep-rooted bond between the hotel group and the Victoria Falls community.
This donation does more than just move waste; it safeguards the global appeal of Victoria Falls. As global travelers become increasingly eco-conscious, the “green” reputation of a destination becomes a primary draw. By working hand-in-hand with the City Council, African Sun is helping to preserve the natural beauty and ecological integrity of the region, ensuring that the majestic “Smoke that Thunders” remains an untainted marvel for generations to come.
African Sun also extended its heartfelt gratitude to Croco Motors for their professional assistance in sourcing and delivering the specialized vehicle to the resort city. The arrival of the refuse compactor is expected to immediately bolster the City Council’s service delivery capacity, reducing the backlog of waste and promoting a culture of cleanliness throughout the municipality.
By investing in the very soil and air that sustain the tourism industry, African Sun is proving that business success and environmental health are inextricably linked. This latest gesture sets a high standard for corporate responsibility in Zimbabwe, proving that when the sun shines on Victoria Falls, it shines on a city that is cleaner, healthier, and ready for the future.
