AFRICA-NORDIC SUMMIT BOOSTS MICE TOURISM IN VICTORIA FALLS

The global spotlight is firmly fixed on Victoria Falls as the city plays host to the prestigious 22nd Africa-Nordic Foreign Ministers Meeting, a two-day summit that commenced today at the Elephant Hills Hotel. This high-level gathering is a significant win for Zimbabwe’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism sector, solidifying Victoria Falls’ reputation as a premier destination for international diplomacy and business.

The summit brings together Foreign Ministers from over 20 African nations and the five Nordic countries—Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland—alongside a vital contingent of representatives from academia, the private sector, and young innovators. Running under the theme, “Leveraging Technology and Collaboration for Future-Ready Societies,” the meeting aims to forge actionable, mutual partnerships, marking a definitive shift away from traditional aid models toward investment-driven cooperation.

Strategic dialogue at the summit is focusing on critical economic drivers for both regions, with specific emphasis on:

  • Technology Transfer and Innovation: Discussions are centred on harnessing cutting-edge tech to drive industrialization and digital transformation across Africa.
  • Green Energy Investment: Nordic countries, known for their leadership in clean energy, are exploring opportunities for investment in renewable energy projects, particularly in solar and biomass, to address Africa’s energy deficit.
  • Strengthening Nordic-African Partnerships in Sustainable Development: The agenda highlights the need for consistent policy and de-risking the business environment to attract long-term investment that promotes shared, sustainable prosperity.

The hosting of this event provides a powerful boost to Victoria Falls, not only through the immediate economic injection from delegate spending on accommodation, transport, and leisure activities, but also by elevating the city’s international profile. As Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Professor Amon Murwira, noted, this high-level presence is a testament to the success of Zimbabwe’s engagement and re-engagement drive.

The meeting includes a parallel Business Forum to connect African entrepreneurs with Nordic investors, targeting key sectors like agribusiness, tech-solutions, clean energy, and hospitality. This focus on trade, innovation, and investment promises to yield concrete agreements and strengthen a partnership built on mutual respect and shared goals for global stability and economic well-being.
